Delayed Breast Reconstrcution

Breast reconstruction can be performed immeditately (right after completion of mastectomy, while still under anaesthesia) or delayed for weeks, months or even years after a mastectomy. The patient will decide on their ideal time point.

Immediate breast reconstruction yields a host of advantages over delayed surgery, but in some cases, an immediate reconstruction just isn't possible. There are a number of reasons for opting for a delayed reconstruction: If you're not entirely decided upon whether you actualy want a reconstruction or, can't decide on which option to go for or, if there's no reconstructive surgeon available in your area. Again another consideration is if there's only implant-based reconstruction available and the patient needs postoperative radiotherapy.

What's the earliest point at which I can have a breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction can be performed at any stage after mastectomy as long as all the adjuvant therapies - such as chemotherapy or radiation - are completed. If the patient has undergone radiotherapy, then at least 3-6 months should be awaited until a reconstruction is performed.

Are there any age limits?

Unless there are important and restrictive medical reasons, there's no age limit to having a breast reconstruction.
