Living with the mastectomy scar

It's a fact that most women choose to live without reconstruction after a mastectomy. In fact, only a minority of women undergo either an immediate or delayed breast reconstruction. And unfortunately, a large percentage of women are never even offered the possibility of breast reconstruction.

In some cases, patients might have only been offered an implant-based reconstruction and chose not to proceed with this option. Implants certainly aren't for everyone. Some mastectomy patients express the notion that they feel too old to have breast reconstruction whilst others regard breast reconstrcution as a cosmetic procedure and therefore not desirable or necessary.

There are a range of other stipulated reasons to decide for or against a breast reconstruction. The important thing is that EVERY woman should be offered the entire range of options at the time of her mastectomy in order to be able to make a well-informed decision.
