Mastectomy
Mastectomy is the removal of the whole breast. There are five different types of mastectoy: simple or total mastectomy, modified radical mastectomy, radical mastectomy and subcutaneous (nipple-sparing) mastectomy, envelope mastectomy.
Depending on the extend and location of your cancer, your breast surgeon will opt for one of the above mentioned techniques.
How will my body react to the mastectomy?
Next to the initial shock of losing a breast, you may experience phantom sensations (weird sensation around your scar), fatigue and dpending on the size of your breast a slight imbalance.
How will it look?
A mastectomy leaves you a scar across your chest. Depending on the technique and the need of postoperativ radiotherapy, this can lead to a tight scar with a certain degree of indentation. These changes would be corrected with a breast reconstruction.
