Pedicled flap

The technique of a pedicled flap was introduced in the early 70s in breast reconstruction surgery. With this technique, tissue is moved to a new site, whilst maintaining its original vascular pedicle. The first pedicled flap introduced for breast reconsruction was the Latissimus dorsi flap. The pedicled TRAM flap (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Muscle) has been used for breast reconstruction since the early 1980s. Until the introduction of the free TRAM flap, this was regarded as the gold standard in autologous reconstruction.
