Prosthesis
If the idea of an immediate breast reconstruction doesn't particularly appeal, then the patient always has the option of wearing a prosthesis.
Today, many types of artificial breast shapes are available. The breast shapes come in different sizes, forms and colours and are designed to fit inside your bra. (Check out the mastectomy bras made with pockets to hold the prosthesis). Additionally, there are also specially designed bras for sports and swimming.
How long do I have to wait before wearing the prosthesis?
Immediately after surgery, the patient will be able to wear a lightweight artificial breast shape placed inside her bra. Once all scars have healed and radiotherapy finished, a permanent prosthesis can be worn.
Who pays for the prosthesis?
Many types of artificial breast shapes are available free on the NHS, with a new replacement offered every two years. Alternatively, there are other prothesis manufacturers and a prosthesis fitting service at Breast Cancer Care. Private patients may need to pay for this service.
