Immediate breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately, right after mastectomy, while still under anesthesia. One of the major advantages with immediate breast reconstruction is the preservation of the skin envelope whilst the entire breast gland, nipple and areola are removed.

The empty skin envelope can then be filled either by using an implant or, using your own tissue (autologous tissue). This is the first stage of the reconstructive procedure, where the breast volume is restored. Depending on the size and shape of your opposite breast, there could be a need for a symmetrisation operation e.g breast lift. The last stage of a breast reconstruction is the nipple reconstruction .

Which technique is suitable for me?

Today, a number of options are available to suit your personal preferences (implant vs autologous tissue), availability of own tissue, need of radiotherapy, lifestyle (e.g. sport) and medical conditions (for instance, diabetes). The aim of the Didyma Foundation is to explain all of the different options, in order to empower the patient and their loved ones to make a well-informed decision.

What is the advantage of an implant only reconstruction?

The missing breast volume is replaced by an implant similar to the type used in aesthetic surgery. As with an implant-based reconstruction, no removal of tissue is required and the operation does not result in additional scars. It's a simple procedure and the recovery time is remarkably quick.

What is the advantage of using the latissimus dorsi muscle, additionally to the implant?

The LD involves the transfer of skin, tissue and most of this muscle from your back. Using the LD provides the possibility of reconstructing missing skin. Furthermore, it reduces the risk of capsular contracture and contributes towards a more natural breast shape.

What is the advantage of autologous breast reconsruction?

This involves the use of excess skin and fatty tissue from your own body to replace the missing part of the breast removed by mastectomy. Autologous breast reconstruction gives a more realistic result than an implant-based reconstruction with regards to touch, feel, appearance and movement. Autologous reconstruction provides the highest quality in breast reconstruction today.
